    MR902-16HF UHF system

I?ve come into a pair of MR902-16HF Horn/Drivers. The spec sheet claims it to be a UHF system with a ?low mass aluminum diaphragm? and ?new ferrite magnetic structure? with a recommended crossover frequency of 5000 Hz or higher. The spec sheet also states that the diaphragm is a 34852 (present and working perfectly) which is the standard 16ohm diaphragm used in the 802/902-16ohm drivers. The driver itself appears to be a 902 driver minus the rubber magnet cover. In addition to a 6uf protection capacitor the diaphragm has a loading cap which I understood to limit high frequency output which doesn?t seem to make sense in a system designed to be an UHF system.

Is this all Altec marketing hype and the driver is really a 902 without cosmetics like the 416-16Z is a 416-16A without the cosmetic magnet cover and does the loading cap help or hinder high frequency output? Can you get the same or better high frequency output with a 902A driver (no loading cap) paired with the MR902 horn.

Read this link from Jeff Markwart he has done some testing on this very issue.I would look to replace the loading cap with felt in the back cover. The loading cap adds protection to the diaphragm to prevent over excursion with a XO point below 1000 Hz.This really is only necessary (Loading Caps) with high output levels. In a home setting go with the felt in the back cover cap.Sounds better ! My 604-8G's came with loading caps.
